This coat of arms was designed and painted to mark my engagement to the special lady in my life. My High School sweetheart from Memphis Tennessee. She now lives in Florida and is a member of a Pirate Krewe that takes part in the parades around the Tampa Bay area, something she has been doing for 20 years or more. I recently had the good fortune and privilege to accompany her and the fine people who make up the Krewe she belongs to and take part in a St. Patrick’s Day parade in Ybor City.
This coat of arms was inspired by her passion for all things piratical and I included a portrait of her as the crest along with her beloved cat Kiwi. Because it wasn’t a commission I was able to be a little more creative with the painting. I used it as an excuse to experiment with metallic paints as a base coat as well as the usual gouache and 23.5c gold leaf. I also added ‘jewels’ which were carefully stuck to the painting after it was completed which added a three dimensional quality to the work.
A fun piece of art for a wonderful lady with a great sense of humour.
